In December 2015, a delegation from Southeast University, led by Vice President Zheng Jiamao, visited Toronto, Canada and the United States. The newly established alumni association warmly welcomed the delegation and reported on its mission, founding process, and goals. Vice President Zheng Jiamao introduced the university’s positive development in recent years to the Toronto alumni, expressed gratitude for the long-term support from alumni both at home and abroad, and welcomed them to visit the university more often. He also presented the Toronto alumni association with a Southeast University flag, hoping that the association’s board members would work hard to build a strong association and provide a good platform for exchange and mutual assistance among local alumni.
During the Spring Festival in February 2016, the alumni association held its first gathering and reunion event, where dozens of alumni from a foreign country came together to relive the wonderful times of their campus days.
In June 2016, the alumni association participated in a summer picnic and volleyball tournament jointly organized by 24 Chinese universities. The alumni volleyball teams competed fiercely, with athletes leaping and bounding on the court and cheering from the audience. The entire competition was completed in a “respectful, fair, and civilized” manner, making the alumni feel as if they had returned to their youthful days on campus and experienced a wonderful and unforgettable day.
In July 2016, the alumni association hosted a summer barbecue party at alumnus Li Mingjia’s picturesque lakeside vacation home. The alumni reminisced about their youthful days as classmates, enjoying a barbecue featuring a blend of Chinese and international cuisine, and admiring the unforgettable lakeside scenery – a truly delightful experience.
In August 2016, the Alumni Association Golf Team participated in the 3rd Toronto Chinese University Cup Golf Tournament, an event that attracted more than 100 elites from all walks of life from 27 universities.
In January 2017, the Alumni Association participated in the first Canadian Chinese University Spring Festival Gala, jointly organized by alumni associations of over 50 Chinese universities in Canada. This grand celebration attracted nearly a thousand students residing in Canada, providing an excellent platform for overseas students to unite and inherit traditional Chinese culture.
To better serve its alumni, the Southeast University Toronto Alumni Association officially registered as a federal non-profit organization (Southeast University Alumni Association in Toronto) on February 5, 2017, receiving enthusiastic donations from alumni.
The Alumni Association’s mission is to: inherit and promote the excellent traditions and spirit of the alma mater; encourage alumni to give back to the alma mater; conduct exchanges and collaborations in various fields such as scientific research, academics, and cultural entertainment; strengthen connections among overseas alumni and help them seek more development opportunities; inherit the essence of national culture; promote scientific and cultural exchange; and serve society.
The alumni network encompasses all students who studied at Southeast University and its predecessor institutions, including Central University, Nanjing Institute of Technology, Nanjing Railway Medical College, Nanjing Transportation College, and Nanjing Geological School, at various academic levels. This includes graduates, students who did not complete their studies, continuing education students, adult education students, international students, and students in other forms of learning, as well as those currently employed or holding positions in the alumni community, such as part-time teachers, honorary professors, visiting professors, and visiting scholars.
Deep affection for one’s alma mater and strong bonds among alumni are evident. Life is full of opportunities and connections: spousal bonds, parental bonds, sibling bonds, classmate bonds, teacher-student bonds… We were originally separated by vast distances, yet during the most precious four years of our youth, we studied together at the same school, shared classes, and lived together. Now, we even live together in different countries. What a bond of alumni, what deep sibling affection! Southeast University is like a giant oyster, diligently nurturing us, these shining pearls. The Southeast University Toronto Alumni Association is like a loving mother’s thread, carefully stringing together pearls of all sizes and imperfections, for only when pearls are strung together can they shine brightly!
